Marshal8e6 Acquires Avinti, Looks To Bridge E-Mail & Web Security

4/15/2009

Marshal8e6 has recently acquired behavior-based malware detection provider, Avinti. The purchase is aimed at enhancing the company's ability to provide solutions that address "blended threats"--e-mails that use Web-based delivery methods to install malware on user machines.

The Avinti solution searches user e-mails for active content and URLs, filtering potentially threatening e-mails and "observing" suspect Web content for malware. According to the company, Avinti's technology does not rely on signatures, allowing it to catch potential threats missed by signature-based security solutions.

"Organizations are increasingly looking for methods to effectively detect and manage inbound malware across all communication channels," said George Shih, Interim CEO, Marshal8e6, in a prepared statement. "When we created Marshal8e6, we committed to providing the most effective multi-channel security solution on the market. With the acquisition of Avinti, we are delivering on that pledge. Their innovative and proactive malware detection technology fulfills customers' requirements to block today's new threats."

Under the agreement, the Avinti team will be immediately merged into Marshal8e6. A development center is being established at Avinti's Utah-based offices where the company's behavior observation technology will be integrated into Marshal8e6's portfolio of products. Financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed.
