Blackboard reported that several colleges and universities in the United States have selected software from its Commerce Suite to address campus commerce and security management. The company said that most of the schools have implemented the Transaction System, which administers online, real-time campus commerce, meal plans, vending, and facility access control through a campus one-card. Students at the University of Wisconsin at Parkside can now enjoy file collaboration capabilities via a free software-and-service product from Microsoft called Office Live Workspace. The university, which last year outsourced its student e-mail accounts to Microsoft Live@edu, now offers students, faculty, and staff the ability to store, share, edit, and collaborate on documents in common Microsoft file formats. The University System of Georgia has deployed the ADVA Optical Networking Fiber Service Platform 3000RE optical transport system to expand its statewide communications network. PeachNet supports 60 University System of Georgia (USG) sites, as well as other government agencies, education institutions and public libraries in the state. This summer Barnard College will deploy about 150 Meru 802.11n-enabled wireless access points in five campus dormitories to provide students with high-performance wireless coverage when they return for the fall term. The deployment will continue in 2009 to additional dorms as well as in The Nexus, a 70,000-square-foot building under construction that will serve as the college's social center. Read More

With the launch of a $1.3 million technology initiative, Wayne State University is joining the first wave of universities adopting new 802.11n high-performance wi-fi technology. The project doubles the capacity of Wayne State's current wireless network within its Midtown Detroit campus. The 33,000-student school is upgrading to 802.11n products from Meru Networks. Read More

The University of Minnesota announced it plans to deploy the Trapeze Networks Smart Mobile 802.11n wireless network product suite campus-wide. Beginning in May and continuing over the next five years, about 9,500 access points will be deployed to serve more than 80,000 people across the university's two campuses, in an effort to deliver secure wireless access to users wherever they are on campus. The University of Houston announced that it would be installing AT&T U-verse services into student housing on a college campus. The IP-based TV and broadband Internet services will be included in all 700 one- and two-bedroom apartments of a 547,000-square-foot residence hall under construction for graduate and professional students.
