The University of Pittsburgh has signed on with Alloy Software to automate technical support across multiple departments. The deal equips the university's Financial Information Systems (FIS) department with Alloy Navigator, which provides a centralized platform for IT service management. The University of Arizona (UA) has completed two major phases of its wireless LAN deployments for voice and data, according to the company managing the project. Today, UA's wireless network--dubbed UAWiFi--spans more than 7 million square feet, 4,500 wireless access points, and 22 buildings. Upon completion, the initiative, which is being managed by systems integrator NEC Unified Solutions and using Cisco equipment, will comprise more than 6,000 access points and 12 million square feet on two campuses. Education consulting firm ASR Analytics has debuted a new suite of services focused on the reporting and analysis of accountability data in colleges and universities. Concordia University Texas is working with Intelliworks' Orion software service to manage its admissions programs. Concordia said it plans to use the solution to manage online event registration and prospect inquiries, track interactions with prospective students, and create targeted e-mail marketing campaigns. Bucks County Community College in Newtown, PA has upgraded its data network and installed Extreme Networks switches to support video collaboration applications. Additionally, all servers were upgraded to Gigabit speeds. Extreme BlackDiamond 8800 switches support the core of the network, and Summit X450 switches outfit the edge. These switches feature Power over Ethernet (PoE), as well as routing capabilities. PoE enables network devices to run off a single CAT5 Ethernet cable that carries both data and power. Read More

In an effort to promote expertise in Web 2.0 application development among the next generation of IT professionals, IBM has teamed up with two universities--University of California, Los Angeles and North Carolina State University--to provide support for academic programs teaching programming using open technologies like Groovy and Java in conjunction with Eclipse and Ruby on Rails. IBM also said it will be providing its previously announced Lotus Mashups software free to the academic community later this year. Read More

Louisiana State University has signed on with Moodlerooms to provide support, hosting, and other services for its Moodle deployment. As part of its five-year, $200 million Banner enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation, the University of Illinois said it will deploy Progress SonicMQ to handle enterprise messaging. SonicMQ acts as middleware for transaction messages. Read More
