During the same week security vendor McAfee said it intended to acquire Secure Computing in a deal valued at $465 million, Secure surfaced as a top contender in the results of testing done by AV Test Labs. In a comparison of 34 suite products, AV said Secure Web Anti-Malware (formerly WebWasher) detected 99.7 percent of malware present and 99.2 percent of adware and spyware, placing it third in both categories behind G DATA Software's AVK 2009 and Avira's Premium Security Suite 2008 for malware and AVK 2009 and F-Secure 2009 for adware and spyware. In the United States, IT spending in education will reach $47.7 billion by the end of this year and is expected to top $56 billion by 2012, according to a new report from Compass Intelligence, an IT consultancy and market research firm. This growth in education--both K-12 and higher ed--is being fueled in particular by expenditures in telecommunications, collaborative technologies, and outsourced IT services. Read More

The sluggish global economy has migrated to the IT industry, according to a survey released recently by Forrester Research. The analyst firm's somewhat gloomy outlook says 43 percent of companies contacted have reduced their overall IT budgets this year, while 24 percent are curtailing discretionary spending. Read More
